Data Engineering Lead

What you'll do

  • Report into a Head of Data Engineering and lead a large team of multidisciplinary engineers in the full data engineering lifecycle, focusing on reusability, stability, scalability, value and performance.
  • Deputise for the Head of Data Engineering when required
  • Provide technical leadership & strategy
  • Own the engineering delivery within the wider end to end delivery lifecycle
  • Be across the detail of what the teams are working on, understanding the scope of the work, this is a hands on role
  • Work in an autonomous manner with minimal supervision
  • Look ahead and around corners, navigating pitfalls to prevent them becoming issues, which could delay or prevent reaching the required outcomes
  • Ensure best practice and consistency in process, continually evaluating and refining to ensure they stay relevant
  • Accountability for and sign off of squad backlogs, plans and estimates
  • Monitor and track progress of team deliverables, remediating when required to bring back in line with plan
  • Work closely with Delivery Leads/Managers and Architecture team throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure on time delivery, including contribution to end to end planning
  • Shape and influence designs, working closely with Architecture team
  • Contribute to department budgeting and tracking
  • Coaching & mentoring of resources across multiple teams
  • Manage performance and output across your teams closely and make visible to all, use results to drive continuous improvement. Clearly aligned to our engineers’ objectives and personal development plans
  • Responsible for a Chapter Practice, creating the strategy and direction of the Chapter discipline to drive continuous improvement in ways of working and engineering process
  • Attracting and bringing in the right talent to Sky and DTA, including building relationships with internal and external partners to support growth (e.g. schools, universities)
  • Grow and develop our people through their career, ensuring robust development plans
  • Motivate and inspire our people and teams and celebrate their successes on a daily basis
  • Be an outstanding role model, by demonstrating high standards of behaviours and actions
  • Be a confident technical leader with experience in a fast-paced environment balancing Agile delivery methodologies against business drivers.
  • Be a committed teammate who demonstrates outstanding communication, social skills and consistent high energy levels, and demonstrates a can-do attitude.
  • Be an experienced leader with a reputation for thought leadership, critical thinking and a strong technical background.
  • Be an analytical problem solver with a strong sense of autonomy, but with an open collaborative approach to getting the job done.

What you'll bring

  • Come from a diverse technology and data background, with experience of working with massive datasets in a cloud environment
  • Proven record of successfully leading large teams, with multiple layers of management
  • Experience of building and transforming high performing multiple multi-disciplinary technology and data teams
  • Demonstrate how to, and show, how you have motivated teams to succeed
  • Experience of positive succession planning and execution, as well as having managed poor performance, formally
  • Knowing what brilliant looks like and how to inspire others to achieve
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Positive energy and enthusiasm
  • Ability to identify future talent and how to grow and develop them
  • Confidence working with all levels of leadership, with experience of managing expectations at this level
  • Exceptional organisational skills
  • Ability to build meaningful relationships quickly
  • Act positively when working in different delivery models, agile / waterfall, in dynamic challenging environment, where there are constantly changing demands and priorities.
  • Believe in and live a continuous improvement mindset
  • Be able to report clearly on and give visibility of activity, performance, risks, issues etc
